ODM party leader Dr. Oburu Odinga has stated that he will defend his Senate seat in the coming 2027 General elections.
Speaking on the 25th of May during a meeting attended by ODM aspirants from Nyanza, Oburu declared that he will seek a second term in his Siaya Senatorial bid.
“I will be defending my position as the Senator of Siaya County in 2027”, said Oburu.
A high-stakes political battle is already taking shape in Siaya County following the fallout between Dr. Oburu, who is largely advocating for the broad-based agenda, and Siaya Governor James Orengo, who is part of the Linda Mwanainchi brigade.
Oburu’s announcement comes amid ongoing discussions between ODM and UDA over a pre-election agreement, raising questions about whether the Orange party has abandoned its chase for the Deputy President slot in the upcoming elections.
Oburu, who is now 82 years old, debuted his political career in the early 80s, having served as Kisumu Counsellor from 1974 to 1979. He has served in the Ministry of Planning and Development between 1981 and 1994.

Oburu represented Bondo constituency as an MP between 1994 and 2013. During the Grand Coalition Government, Oburu was appointed an assistant Minister for Finance. From 2013 to 2017, the ODM party nominated Oburu as a Member of Parliament in the National Assembly, and from 2017 to 2022, he was once again nominated as an MP in the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).

The ODM party faces uncertain times ahead of the 2027 General elections following the sudden demise of Raila Odinga, who was a key figure in Nyanza politics. It is a wait-and-see to find out if the ODM party will remain a formidable force in the coming elections.
